It’s time to go electric
JACK MEEHAN
It has been a rewarding experience to work with Electrify Boroondara to create engaging promotional videos and help grow the group’s profile.
Electrify Boroondara Expo
Electrify Boroondara is hosting a huge electrification Expo today, with experts panels on topics ranging from solar, EVs, finance and even a grid expert or two. There are fifty stall holders with industry partners and experts. The Expo is set up as a one stop shop, with the goal of informing and inspiring Boroondara residents on how to begin to electrify their homes.
Working on the Electrify Boroondara Promotional videos
In order to create these engaging promotonal videos for Electrify Boroondara, we collaborated with Cr Wes Gault and members of the Boroondara community. The videos helped shape the Electrify Boroondara brand, showing endorsement from Council and the community and providing a concise snapshot of scope of the group and the benefits of electrification.
A: Front page promo
After consulting on core ideas and values, a rough script was assembled, key clips selected from prior interviews, and a script prepared for Cr Gault, revised, approved, and shot with two cameras. Further overlays were shot or selected, including with Electrify Boroondara volunteers.
This two minute short form video now features on the front page of the Electrify Boroondara website.
The Electrify Boroondara Project with Cr Wes Gault
Councillor Wes Gault endorses Electrify Boroondara and makes the health, financial and climate cases for electrification in Boroondara. Electrification delivers long term cost-savings, as the cost of gas rises and renewable energy increases in market-share and pushes electricity prices down. De-gasifying lessens the risk of gas-leaks and harmful by-products of combustion in the home.
“Using electricity for heating and cooling,
and putting solar panels on your roof, will
save you money … Electrifying our homes is
the way to the future.”
B: On demand short-form vertical video
Given a very limited window for shooting pieces to camera at the end of another event, I was able to create multiple shorts/reels in the lead up to the first Electrify Boroondara Expo. The emphasis was a direct, fast paced style with overlays adjusted in Photoshop from Electrify Boroondara website and other Expo promotional materal. Results are archived here, here, here and here.
C: Community voice shorts
A relaxed documetary style was used for shooting the interviews – a soft, encompassing process in a friendly conversational style, easing into the interview. Each volunteer needed a slightly different approach, helping again with a sense of authenticity.
I carefully selected the best footage and made choice cuts and edits to make succinct, meaningful promotional material. The videos express the Electrify Boroondara message .
Electrification – Comfort and Style with Julie Mulhauser
Electrification is important to homeowners’ long term respiratory health. Dr Julie Mulhouser, mother of an asthmatic son, speaks about how getting off of gas has made her feel more secure and what electrification and insulation has done for her home.
“By going all-electric, not only have we
benefitted ourselves with lower energy bills,
but we have got a healthy and comfortable
home and we are making a positive
contribution to effective climate change
action in the future.” – Julie Mulhauser
Electrifying a Heritage Home with Philippa Sholl
Removing your gas service and electrifying your home can bring savings and health benefits. Boroondara resident Phillipa Sholl speaks about the ways she has been able to electrify and insulate her home.
“I decided I wanted to try out induction as a bit of an experiment.
We actually haven’t
used our gas cooktop since we bought that
one, so now it’s really become a pot-rack,
actually.” – Philippa Sholl
Moving Away from Gas with Marey Mahoney
Mary Mahoney is a Boroondara resident who saw her energy bills drop drastically after she electrified her home, allowing her to focus on the important things in life. Reducing household emissions is a critical path for reducing emissions in Australia “We are in a climate crisis, we have to do something.”
“We are in a climate emergency, and we all
need to do something.” – Mary Mahoney
Community engagement key to climate action in upcoming Council elections
Councils are the layer of government closest to our daily lives, and they have the power to help us to go electric, improve our health, transport and protect biodiversity and the environment. It's time to step up - interviews with sitting Councillors and candidates before the October 2024 elections.
